In 1979, Gil and Marge Gudgel were asked to make a 1/144th scale Cape Cod-style house as a souvenir for the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts Houseparty. The attendees loved the souvenirs so much that the Gudgels began making more of these little houses. They considered themselves the makers of the dollhouse's dollhouse by creating 1/12th scale versions for 1/12th scale houses. All the houses can be opened but are not finished inside; this was intentional so that the owners could freely decorate the interiors. After Gil and Marge Gudgel passed in the 1990s, all Gudgel houses were retired. Now they are highly collected for their history, craftsmanship and unique construction.
